Search for innovative skyscraper launched

The international architects' collaboration, eVolo, is inviting architects, engineers and designers to explore new ideas and concepts for vertical density as part of its 2009 Skyscraper Competition.
Competition organisers eVolo argue that skyscrapers have been springing up in fast-developing countries without careful consideration of the urban fabric, environmental effects, and quality of life. The 2009 competition is therefore calling for innovative designs for the 21st century that take into consideration the historical and social context, existing urban fabric, human scale, and the environment.
The competition imposes no restriction on site, height or shape - instead, the idea is to give the designers enough freedom to address the challenge in the most creative and innovative way, while ensuring that their designs are technologically feasible and environmentally responsible.
All students, architects, engineers and designers are invited to participate - and are encouraged to form multidisciplinary teams - with the aim of winning one of the three prizes on offer: US $2,000 for the winning submission, with prizes of US $1,000 and US $500 for the second- and third-placed entries. There is no limit on the number of participants in a team, and individual entries are accepted.
The competition has been gaining in prominence in recent years, with the 2008 edition being covered by more than ten architecture and design magazines and by several news, fashion and art publications. The eVolo Book with the best projects of the first three years has also received excellent reviews and has been included in the catalogue for the Book Expo America, Frankfurt Book Fair, and Beijing Book Fair.
Full details of how to enter the competition can be found at the eVolo Architecture website.
